Dear reader,

In each issue we spotlight:

Oh, and because no good dealflow comes without a side of drama, expect a sprinkle of spicy tech tea to warm up.

Startup Spotlight: Four Growers

One Line Pitch: Four Growers is a Pittsburgh-based agtech and robotics startup building AI-driven autonomous harvesting robots that help greenhouse growers reduce labor costs and scale sustainable food production.

Raising: Series A — recently closed $9M+ led by Basset Capital with participation from Y Combinator, Ospraie Ag Science and others to expand production and commercialization.

Team: Brandon Contino | Founder & CEO; Dan Chi | Co-Founder & CTO

Why yes: they tackle one of the most persistent pain points in commercial agriculture (labor shortages and high harvesting costs) by automating greenhouse crop harvesting with AI and robotics. Their flagship robots use advanced vision systems and proprietary algorithms to identify, pick, quality-check, and package produce like tomatoes with speed and precision. The company is already deploying fleets in commercial greenhouses (including international deployments in the Netherlands) and is expanding capabilities to handle other crops like cucumbers and peppers.

Why pause: Agriculture automation remains a complex, capital-intensive market where growers are traditionally slow to adopt new systems. Entrenched manual processes and the variability of plant environments mean that ROI timelines can be long, and scaling across diverse crop types may still face operational hurdles.

Tech Tea:

In just the past week, OpenAI bought health startup Torch, Anthropic launched Claude for healthcare, and Sam Altman-backed MergeLabs closed a $250 million seed round at an $850 million valuation. The money and products are pouring into health and voice AI, but so are concerns about hallucination risks, inaccurate medical information, and massive security vulnerabilities in systems handling sensitive patient data.

Zuck’s Threads surpasses X for daily user numbers. Threads had 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android as of January 7, 2026, after months of growth, while X has 125 million daily active users on mobile devices. Users on reddit speculate if this is due to Meta agressive ad campaigns withing their platforms or backlash+legal problems of Grok.

Mira Murati’s startup Thinking Machines informed employees that one of the company’s co-founders and CTO had been let go, citing poor performance and conversations with competitors(Open AI). During the same meeting, two senior researchers separately announced in the company’s Slack that they were resigning, turning the all-hands into a sudden and public reckoning for the company. She bounced back pretty fast and announced Soumith Chintala as the new CTO.

Higgsfield, a generative AI video startup founded by former Snap executive Alex Mashrabov, has raised more than $130 million in Series A funding, valuing the company at over $1.3 billion. Since April 2025, Higgsfield has attracted over 15 million users and now generates around 4.5 million videos daily, primarily for commercial marketing use.

Reverse Pitch: Marlon Nichols

Marlon is a Managing General Partner of MaC Venture Capital

Thesis: seed-stage investments across consumer internet, media & entertainment, marketplaces, fintech.

Stage&Check: Pre-Seed → Seed. $500K-$1.5M+

Geography: U.S.-centric

Contact: warm intros, portfolio founders (pipe, pure stream, finesse), and VC networks.

How he helps:
Marlon brings deep operational insight, a strategic mindset shaped by past roles at Intel Capital and as a Kauffman Fellow, and an expansive network spanning tech, entertainment, sports, and media. He partners with founders on go-to-market strategy, narrative construction, cultural trend navigation, and scaling branding — helping startups position themselves where tech adoption meets cultural momentum. His playbook emphasizes storytelling, disciplined growth, and network effects that amplify product relevance.

Red flags: Pure tech plays without cultural signal paths may struggle to align with MaC’s thesis. Businesses lacking a strong narrative or clear cultural adoption runway are less likely to get priority. Concepts without early market validation or cultural resonance can be deprioritized — especially if they hinge solely on tech novelty without a defined path to mainstream behavioral shifts.

Fast-pass: Demonstrable traction in tight communities that naturally scale into broader cultural adoption (e.g., Gen Z, niche creators, new consumer habits). Founders who can articulate how their product rides a cultural trend or shift, not just a tech capability. Early KPIs showing network effects, retention, and community momentum. Warm intros from trusted founders in his portfolio or peer VCs deepen engagement chances quickly.

Notes: Marlon’s profile includes industry recognition — he’s been featured on Business Insider’s Seed 100 list of top early-stage investors and is widely quoted in venture coverage alongside PCI ranking indexes for returns. He’s also a vocal advocate for diversity and representation in tech, serving on the board of Kauffman Fellows and prioritizing underrepresented founders in deployment strategy. 2 Meet him at THIS event in LA.
